Do you find music theory boring? Do you want to learn to sight read? Do you want to understand chord progressions and key signatures to improve your musicianship or composition skills? Is your child struggling to maintain concentration in school theory lessons? Do you have a music theory exam coming up and need some extra help with revision?

I run music theory lessons with a difference. Because I love music theory (yes, I am a bit of a geek) and am passionate about music, I want everyone to understand and enjoy it. Rather than just running through each lesson using stale, written-based methods, I like to combine written and aural lessons with a more hands on approach: Each lesson we will apply what we have learned to a practical exercise using your instrument of choice. Whether it be writing our own song around what we have just learned, or playing a popular song which uses the key/progession/intervals. This will help the new knowledge to stick, and be much more FUN!

Lessons tailored to your needs and goals, can include:

  • Know your notes
  • Reading rhythms
  • The major scale
  • The minor scale
  • The circle of fifths
  • Intervals
  • Triads
  • Triad inversions
  • Chord scale
  • Relative major and minor
  • Pentatonic scales
  • 7th chords
  • 9th, 11th and 13th chords (for jazz)
  • Modes
